GUIDES / PHOTO PRIVACY

How to audit photo metadata across a collection

Generate a private CSV summary of JPEG PNG and WebP privacy markers.

Protecting privacy means knowing which information is hidden in a file or link, and confirming that the cleaned copy still works. Use this checklist as a starting point, not as a guarantee of anonymity.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 01

Choose a small representative set of photos, in supported formats.

  2. 02

Run the batch photo metadata report to find recognized EXIF, XMP, IPTC and PNG text chunks.

  3. 03

Download the CSV and review each filename, inspection result and error column.

  4. 04

Use a matching cleaner for files with targeted marker types.

  5. 05

Inspect image pixels and unknown proprietary metadata independently for high-assurance use.

Before you share the result

Always inspect the output visually and verify it using a separate checker where possible. Metadata removal cannot remove identifiable objects, names, addresses, faces or text visible in pixels. Automated text redaction can miss irregular private values.

What this guide does not promise

There is no universal one-click guarantee that a file or link is anonymous. Different apps may add metadata when exporting, and some formats contain unsupported private fields. Use a specialized full-format tool if you need high-assurance removal.
