1. Work from a copy
Keep the original file unchanged. Save your working copy under a new filename so that you can compare the two. If a file contains sensitive information, do not share either version until you finish the full review.
2. Examine the content you can actually see
Photo metadata removal cannot erase faces, address labels, car registration plates, street signs, reflections, computer screens or documents in the picture. Check each part of the image at full size. For PDFs and screenshots, inspect every page or frame for names, signatures, account numbers and unintended attachments.
3. Check common hidden fields
For JPEG, PNG and WebP, inspect EXIF/GPS, captions, timestamps, authors and supported XMP-style fields using an appropriate photo privacy tool. For text, JSON and CSV, inspect names, email addresses, personal identifiers, keys, tokens, logs and unexpected columns. Automated detection is only a screening step.
4. Clean a separate copy
Choose a cleaner for the exact format. Download the output, and do not overwrite the original. If you use batch ZIP downloads, check every extracted file—not just the ZIP filename. If the tool rejects a corrupt or unsupported file, treat that as incomplete work rather than as a successful cleaning.
5. Verify independently
Open the cleaned copy with a normal image or document viewer. Confirm that pages, orientation, text, colors and audio/video playback still work as expected. Re-run a different metadata checker if available. Unknown proprietary tags, color profiles, embedded thumbnails or metadata added during sharing can remain.
6. Inspect the delivery method
Before sharing, check cloud-storage permissions, recipients, public-link settings and link expiration. For web links, use the tracking URL cleaner and confirm the cleaned URL still reaches the intended site. A cleaned link can still expose identity through the destination, account session or page content.
7. Use higher-assurance tools when needed
For legal, medical, financial or high-risk material, use a trustworthy dedicated redaction workflow and independently validate the exported file. PrivacyClean does not certify anonymity or permanently erase data from recipients' devices, file backups or cloud history.
